Michael Moore plans Net-only film premiere

Filmmaker Michael Moore plans to premiere his latest documentary exclusively on the Internet for free, forgoing the traditional theatrical release.

Slacker Uprising , which documents Moore's 62-city tour through swing states during the 2004 U.S. presidential election to rally young voters, will be available for download for three weeks, beginning September 23. A DVD of the 97-minute film will be released on October 7 through Amazon.com and Netflix.

"This is being done entirely as a gift to my fans," Moore said in a statement Thursday. "The only return any of us are hoping for is the largest turnout of young voters ever at the polls in November. I think Slacker Uprising will inspire (millions) to get off the couch and give voting a chance."

Moore's camp said no consideration was ever given to a theatrical release for the film, which cost about $2 million to make, perhaps forfeiting a nice profit at the box office. His last two documentaries, Sicko and Fahrenheit 9/11, are two of the three highest-grossing documentaries ever released.

The download will be available on BlipTV. See trailer below

The planned release takes a page out of Radiohead's book, which released its album In Rainbows on the Internet in October 2007. The band invited fans to pay what they wanted for the download, but the music was essentially free for the taking. Radiohead has never revealed the promotion's sales figures, but there was speculation that the money wasn't very good.

Nine Inch Nails, led by Trent Reznor, followed Radiohead by offering the digital version of the album Ghosts I-IV for free, as well as charging for premium versions. As of last month, Reznor said that the album had generated 781,917 transactions and $1.6 million.

Moore is sometimes guilty of hyperbole, but his films bring attention to things that many of us don't have time to concentrate on. This should be worth a watch.

Hey mikalg, millions really care what Michael Moore has to say. He is out there fighting even for you, who are too stupid to care.

Yes, there are those of use who care. While Moore can be over-the-top in making his points, he still manages to shed light on important issues. Even if one doesn't like Moore's style or methods, if one is capable of critical thought than one can't help but appreciate Moore's work to some degree.

Micheal Moore is the biggest idiot that has ever made movies in this country. His Farenheit 9/11 had so many lies and outright disortions, it should have been classified as revisionist fiction intsead of a "documentary". The more dognuts he consumes, the fatter he gets, and the more he lies.
His last movie failed to win the elections for John Kerry. Don't see why this new propaganda from him should be any different.

at least he hasn't lied as much as some people "cough" republicans "cough"

I agree that Michael Moore at times tries way too hard to tug at heart strings when the simple facts that he points out speak for themselves. But I'm glad that he is out there in the face of the complete tidal wave of hysterical right wing FUD and chatter that seems to permeate the entire media as a whole.

'hysterical right wing FUD and chatter that seems to permeate the entire media'?

Have you ever watched NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN?

He obviously hasn't. Or watched the MSM with blinkered eyes. LOL!
Anyone who sees the stark raving mad leftwing hate that permeates from Kieth Olberman and MSNBC, or reads the New York Times, and thinks that is "right wing", is obvioulsy smoking something stronger than crack.
by The_Decider September 5, 2008 8:24 AM PDT
Those are all owned and controlled by conservative people/companies. CNN is a small step above faux news.

To Kwas, Olbermann is more of a centrist, who just happens to think Bush destroyed our country(just like 75% of us do). The only true liberal on the cable news channels is Rachel Maddow.

Really funny spin by the Micheal Moore Kool Aid drinking loony left going on right here.
Micheal Moore is not just "guilty of hyperbole" or "over-the-top in making his points". Micheal Moore is guilty of outright lies, deliberate distortions, fraud and disinfirmation. Period.
Why, even the left wing "Slate" magazine slammed him for his lies right here:

LOL

Thanks, now lets talk about the damage that the lies of Bush and Cheney wrought.

Slate doesn't look very liberal to me, nor does that article make any compelling argument, no wonder you like it.
by the_ricochet September 5, 2008 4:20 PM PDT
I love how enraged conservatives get when they think a FILMMAKER tells a lie but when their beloved president and vice president lies to get into an illegal war they turn the other way, close their ears and make "lala" noises.

"Have you ever watched NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN?"

As a foreigner who has lived in the US for a few years, I must say that while NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN are far better than FOX and certainly not as right wing, in a grander scheme they do feel more on the right, or a bit right of center. The right like to talk of some liberal bias -- how laughable.

"Have you ever watched NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN?"

How many of these stations even questioned invading Iraq? Even the slightest? Liberal media yeah right...the same corporations that own these stations are making the bombs we drop. People are getting brainwashed by Fox, they now think anything kind of rational intelligent thought is "elitist". Same thing was done in Germany in the 30's and 40's.

Shel74nf : "How many of these stations even questioned invading Iraq?"

Unless you have been living on Pluto, NBC, CBS,ABC,CNN, MSNBC "question invading Iraq" all the time.
Not only that, these leftwing broadcasting outfits have constantly falsefied stories to make Al Quaeda look good in Iraq, sometimes photoshopped photos, and done everything they can to cover up the fact that America is actually WINNING in Iraq right now, and taking the Al Quaeda vermin apart.
The New ork Times for example has conssitently leaked very sensiive national security information so their pals at Al Quaeda can get all the info they need to defeat the US armed forces in Iraq and Afghganistan. Thank heavens th New York Times aka The Slimes have been woefully unsuccseeful in their evil endeavour.

shel74nf : "the same corporations that own these stations are making the bombs we drop. "

The crazy left strike again.
Perhaps you will show me what oprt of Time Waner(they own CNN) or CBS or ABC or the New York Times, actually make them bombs you are talking about, yes? I think I know as much about the corporate structure of Time Warner and the New York times or LA Times or CBS as anyone else, and I know for a FACT, that they have no section that even comes close to making ANY bombs of ANY description.

They do today, but did not during the build up.

The liberal media is a myth perpetrated by the people who control the MSM(conservatives) as some sort of boogie man.

The only thing funnier is that idiots like you parrot the myth as truth and don't mind wars started on lies, incompetence, torture, unintelligent leaders, etc.

NBC is partially owned by General Electric - while they once did make vital components for war - such as warship engines and the like - I am not sure if they make anything practical any longer. Last I heard, they were considering divesting themselves of their household appliances unit.

Great, a liar who believes life and healthcare in Cuba is better than life and health in the US wants to spread lies to an admitted audiences of slackers believing that getting the uniformed out to vote is a good thing. Wow, this has to be good for America. Maybe Moore hopes our lifestyles will be as great as Cuba's (or some other third world, dictator led country).

Don't get me wrong, I believe everyone should become informed on the issues and then vote, but those who have no clue about the issues have no business helping to decide the future of the country. Voting is an area where rights and responsibilities collide.

Kwasiowusu: NBC is owned by GE, a major military contractor. CBS used to be owned by Westinghouse (not sure any more what that relationship is). Anyway, I think you watch these channels but not the crititics, else you would know that major media studies show how these guys always air mostly pro-war analysts, ex military etc, compared to any other view when it comes to war.

I'm guessing that Moore is a fad that has passed, and he knows it.

Propaganda just isn't in vogue anymore among the left-leaning political set, now that there's a real shot at them regaining power in both Congress and the White House. After all, one cannot be seen as a hysterical conspiracy theorist (with a penchant for ignoring such basic things as logic, fact, and that ever-niggling 'causation vs. correlation' thing) ...especially when the voters might be looking. Mustn't scare them off, you know.

I suspect that if Obama wins and the Dems keep Congress, Moore will be quietly thanked by the Left, then ignored to oblivion and stuffed into a closet somewhere. His time has (thankfully) passed.

I'm not claiming that either party has the mantle of truth and/or justice.

What I am saying is, The left does not want Moore gumming things up now that they have a chance at power with a moderate-looking presidential candidate and full control of Congress.
by GeneralWarrenq September 5, 2008 7:56 AM PDT
Moore has lost his mind, and like Tom Cruise, is soon to lose it all.

@ galacticcruiser: "since when did the right use logic and fact (Iraq's ties to al queda?.."

Only someone living in dreamland would challenge the fact that there are plenty of Al Quaeda vermin operating in Iraq. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi who was swifty sent to meet 12 virgins by US Top Guns, was one of the most vicious, murdering, derranged Al Quaeda killers this world has even seen. Children, babies, the sick in hospitals, it didn't matter, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi still went after them and blew them apart anyway.

galacticcruiser : "CBS used to be owned by Westinghouse (not sure any more what that relationship is)."

CBS is NOT owned by Westignhouse. Has not been owned by ANY bomb making outfit for as long as the war in Iraq or afghanistan has been going on, or even before the first Gulf War in 1990. Better check your facts dude.
ABC is owned by Disney, so unless you are going to tell us that Disney is secretly making bombs at Deisneyland, then you are blowing pure hot air and nothing else.
CNN is owned by Time Warner, that owns Time magazine, Time Warner Cable, People Magazine, Warner Brothers movie studious etc. They have NEVER made a bomb in theit entire lives.
Stop talking nonsense.

Kwasiowusu: sorry, I should have clarified -- I mean Bush's claim BEFORE the invasion that Saddam supported and had ties to Al Queda -- that was clearly rubbish (different ideologies of Saddam Hussein and Al Queda). Even intelligence services (including head of CIA at the time if I recall right) said this was not credible. Only after the war, predictably, al queda got in there. So, original point still holds

galacticcruiser : "As a foreigner who has lived in the US for a few years, I must say that while NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN are far better than FOX and certainly not as right wing"

As a foreigner living in our country, you have no idea what you are talking about. Let's face it, the only news the Europeans want to hear is anti-American news. I should know. I used to live in Britian, and had to put up with constant, unrelenring, unremitting anti-Ajmerican hate, from British broadcasting outfits like the notoriously anti-American BBC.
FACT: ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, New York Times, LA Times Chicago Tribune, Seattle PI, Newsweek, Time mgagazine, and over 98% of the american media are strongly left wing idealogues, strongly shill for ther Democratic Party, and have been campiagning for Obama nonstop since teh start of this elections cycle.
Keith Olberman and his cohorts at MSNBC might as well declare MSNBC as the eadquarters of the Obama campiagn. There is no difference between MSNBC and the propaganda that comes out of Obama. The Mainstream media being in the can for Obama is the reason we have a a 2-bit "community organiser" from the most corrupt political machine in the country, The Democratic Party political machine in Chicagio, is now actually running for president as the Democratic Party candidate. Its a joke.
