Toshiba's new Satellite P15-S479 is one of the first notebooks to run Microsoft's upgraded Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) 2004, which hits stores today. This big blue notebook, with a 15.4-inch, wide-aspect display, is the junior version of the massive Satellite P25-S607, which also has MCE 2004.
Upside: The Satellite P15-S479 is a great way to combine personal computing with TV viewing and DVD burning in a package that's more portable than the Satellite P25-S607. The Satellite P15-S479 features a desktop 2.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512MB of RAM, a DVD-Multidrive, integrated dual-band Wi-Fi, and Nvidia's GeForce FX Go5200 graphics processing unit.
Downside: At $2,199, the Satellite P15-S479 is more expensive than many other wide-screen notebooks. And it remains to be seen whether MCE 2004 irons out all the kinks from which the previous version suffered. Finally, unlike the Satellite P25-S607, the P15-S479's TV tuner is a separate device.
Outlook: The convergence of notebooks with home entertainment systems is still in its infancy. Ultimately, the combination of a notebook such as the Satellite P15-S479 with your TV and stereo could be a boon for couch potatoes everywhere. Check back later for our full review.
